Artmaking in the Arctic!

Inspiring iceberg photo by artist Kathy Cornwell

In my last post, I shared the travel art supply kit that I packed for our trip to the Arctic. Now that we’re home and I have a moment to breathe, let me share with you how it went. Did I use anything in that kit? What art supply was used the most?

It was a great trip!

I’m glad we took this trip. We went to some extremely remote locations. At one point, we were just over 500 miles from the North Pole! The sea ice formed fascinating shapes that will definitely inform my collage shapes.

We saw polar bears, walruses, whales, and sea birds. We walked on a black beach and were awed by huge icebergs. Inspiration galore! Here are a couple of photos:

So, did I make any art?

I did! I made a few collages in my sketchbook, and found this little friend in the process:

I also created a mini-mockup and did studies for a new series I’m planning:

I was surprised to find that most of my artmaking time during this trip was in Procreate on my iPad. The main reason? It’s not messy. I felt inhibited by my concern about making a mess in a space that is not my own.

I found it convenient to grab the iPad and make quick, fun sketches and doodles. It only took a few minutes a day, but the results will be much more long-lasting: I’m creating a series of new masks (like a stencil) that I can use while gel printing. Some of these new masks are BIG, because I’m about to do some larger-scale gel printing. I’m so excited! I’ll share these masks with you soon.

Here’s a quick peek at some of the sketches I made on vacation in Procreate:

I came home with bucketloads of inspo!

There’s no way to fully share with you the many ways that I was inspired by the plants and flowers, ice shapes, rocks, and animals of the Arctic. But I can tell you that the things I saw and experienced are already influencing my art.

I refilled my well in so many ways on this trip. I am so grateful to have had this experience!
